Village of Atlantic Beach – Emergency Weather Advisory
Dear Residents of the Village of Atlantic Beach,
A major coastal storm system—a potential nor’easter—is forecast to impact our area beginning tomorrow morning. Today, Saturday, February 21, remains mostly cloudy with a high near 44°F, but conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly starting early Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Atlantic Beach from tomorrow, Sunday, February 22 at 6:00 AM through Monday, February 23 at 6:00 PM. A Coastal Flood Watch is also in effect from Sunday evening (10:00 PM) through Monday at 4:00 AM.
This storm is expected to bring significant snow accumulations of 9 to 17 inches, wind gusts up to 43 mph, wind chill values in the 20s, and the potential for coastal flooding. The heaviest snow and strongest winds are expected Sunday night through Monday morning.
Expected Storm Timeline
- Tonight (Saturday Night): A chance of rain before 4:00 AM, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33°F. Northeast winds 8–14 mph.
- Tomorrow – Sunday (Feb. 22): Snow developing mainly after 7:00 AM. Temperatures falling to around 33°F. Windy, with east winds 21–26 mph gusting to 38 mph. New snow accumulation of 2–4 inches during the day.
- Sunday Night: Heavy snow with areas of blowing snow after 1:00 AM. Low around 30°F. Northeast winds around 31 mph with gusts to 43 mph. Additional accumulation of 4–8 inches.
- Monday (Feb. 23): Snow likely, mainly before 1:00 PM, with blowing snow possible. High near 36°F. Windy. Additional accumulation of 3–5 inches. Conditions gradually improving Monday evening.
- Monday Night: Mostly cloudy and blustery. Low around 26°F.
Home & Property Preparation
- Prevent Frozen Pipes: With temperatures expected to drop into the upper 20s, keep your heat set to at least 60°F and allow faucets on exterior walls to drip slightly.
- Secure Outdoor Items: Coastal wind gusts up to 43 mph are forecast. Please secure patio furniture, trash cans, and any loose outdoor items today.
- Snow Removal: With potentially over a foot of snow expected, residents are urged to move vehicles off the streets today to allow for efficient snow-clearing operations.
- Coastal Flooding: A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for Sunday night. Residents in flood-prone areas should take precautions and monitor conditions closely.
Power & Safety Concerns
- Hazardous Travel: Travel is expected to be very difficult to dangerous from Sunday afternoon through Monday. Avoid unnecessary travel during this period.
- Power Outages: Heavy, wet snow combined with gusty winds can bring down trees and power lines. Ensure your devices are charged and you have a battery-operated radio and flashlights readily available.
- Blowing Snow & Reduced Visibility: Blowing snow is expected Sunday night into Monday, significantly reducing visibility. Do not attempt to drive in whiteout conditions.
- Pets & Vulnerable Residents: Ensure pets are brought indoors well before the storm’s onset. Please check on elderly neighbors and anyone who may need assistance.
