IMPORTANT: “Winter Storm Fern” Preparedness and Safety

Dear Residents of the Village of Atlantic Beach,

A major weather system, dubbed Winter Storm Fern, is currently moving toward the East Coast. While today, Thursday, January 22, remains mostly cloudy with a high of 45°F, conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly over the weekend.

Current forecasts for Atlantic Beach indicate that a Winter Storm Watch will likely go into effect starting Saturday evening (January 24through Monday afternoon. This storm is expected to bring significant snow accumulations and “dangerous wind chills” in the single digits or below zero as an Arctic air mass settles into the region.

To ensure the safety of our community, please review these updated preparedness reminders:

Home & Property Preparation

  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: With temperatures forecast to drop to a low of 11°F later this week, keep your heat set to at least 60°F and allow faucets on exterior walls to drip slightly.
  • Secure Outdoor Items: High coastal winds are expected with this system. Please secure patio furniture, trash cans, and any loose outdoor items now.
  • Snow Removal: Residents are urged to move vehicles off the streets before Saturday evening to allow for efficient snow-clearing operations.

Power & Safety Concerns

  • Dangerous Cold: Wind chills are expected to be hazardous. Limit outdoor exposure during the peak of the storm and ensure pets are brought indoors.
  • Power Outages: Significant snow and gusty winds can lead to power interruptions. Ensure your devices are charged and you have a battery-operated radio.
  • Emergency Contact: In the event of an emergency, always dial 911.
